100 Days of Patterns

I’ve been neglecting to post, but that doesn’t mean that I haven’t been super busy working on lots new things. In April I decided to begin a 100 day challenge. This was a fun and challenging experience. I learned a lot about my style, preferences and work habits. Although it was a wonderful experience I’m excited to say today is the 100th day and I’m happy to take a little break from pattern making and regroup. So, here’s what I’ve been up to the past 100 days.

Farm Fresh Charm

Here’s my final piece from week two of Make Art that Sells Home Decor. This week the focus was on fabric. I’m a little disappointed with how my mock-ups look because I put a lot of detail into each individual piece of art and most of it gets lost once I reduce everything to fit on my presentation page. It was still a really fun week and I so happy I’ve been able to dedicate so much time to making new art.

Pattern Play

Drawing flowers is probably one of my favorite things to do and I really love composing them into repeating patterns. I started this one with a few sketches and then the above right pattern was supposed be the finished pattern. Then adventitiously I grabbed a few layers to paste into a new document to make sure edges of the repeat lined up and I ended up with the deconstructed version of the pattern below. I ended up liking the below version so much more. I’m so excited to try this new technique again. I feel like a lot of my patterns feel really dense. I always have this urge to fill up all the space. I think this new approach is a great way achieve a more airy feel in my work and I love the abstractness of it too.

Pattern Play

I began experimenting with surface design soon after I graduated from college, while working at a small stationery company. Since then patterns have  become an obsession of mine. I love the challenge of creating repeats, it’s kind of like putting together a puzzle. Here is one of my most recent designs and the photo that inspired it.
